The Croatian language learning program is vital for nurturing and promoting the Croatian language and culture and encouraging cooperation and ties between the Republic of Croatia and Croatian emigrants and their descendants. At the same time, this program also encourages Croatian emigrants and their descendants to repatriate to the Republic of Croatia. It creates the prerequisites for their easier integration into the economic and social life of the Republic of Croatia. Even though most participants return to their countries of residence upon completing the course, the knowledge gained through the Croatian language learning program is valuable and useful not only to them but also to many emigrant communities, in the work of which many former participants become involved.
The right to scholarships for Croatian language learning is exercised by applying to a public call. The members of the Croatian people or their descendants, their spouses, and friends of the Croatian people and the Republic of Croatia who nurture the Croatian identity and promote the Croatian cultural unity may apply.
The scholarship for learning Croatian in the Republic of Croatia covers the expense of Croatian language learning, up to two subsidized meals a day, and an allowance for on- or off-campus housing.
The Croatian language course is organized at the Faculties of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb, Split, Rijeka, and Osijek. It is run by “Croaticum” - Centre for Croatian as a Second and Foreign Language (Zagreb), The Centre for Croatian Studies Abroad (Split), The Rijeka School of Croatian Studies (Rijeka), and the Department of Croatian Language and Literature (Osijek).
In addition, it is essential to point out that the number of scholarships for the 2019/2020 academic year has been increased and amounts to a total of 250 scholarships. Furthermore, from 2018 the application must be submitted electronically (e-application form), which modernized the application system of the Public Call. The said indeed represents a novelty in the work of the Central State Office for Croats Abroad and an improvement in the public call’s application submitting and processing procedure.
